Mooji Sangha Bhavan
Mooji Sangha Bhavan (MSB) is Moohi Baba’s advaita vedanta ashram located in southern Portugal. It is home to a wide variety of volunteers with varying levels of skills who generally stay for short periods of time.
About the project
I spent about six months living and studying at MSB, and while I was there I volunteered to help run the Land Care program.
With the flow of volunteers coming through, I saw a wonderful opportunity to make the land-care work more accessible to those without any prior garden or land-care experience, in a fun and community-oriented basis.
With the help of anywhere from 4 to 10 volunteers daily, we set up the new organic permaculture vegetable garden with drip irrigation system. And to help the project run smoothly, I coordinated the daily land-care work and guided the volunteers who wanted to help out.
What we did

Vegetable garden area before we started

Preparing the main growing areas and re-establishing the Hugelkultur raised beds.

after 3 weeks the produce is growing with companion planting techniques to enhance quality and provide variety

Gravity fed drip irrigation watering system in place which saves a lot of time in future with less people hours watering garden

An abundance of produce is coming!
The results
Within three months, the vegetable garden went from zero to providing about 20% of the fresh vegetables needed by the kitchen, reducing the ashram’s food costs
Inspired and empowered volunteers with permaculture skills and knowledge.
Supplied MSB with easy-to-follow operating procedures and systems, so the garden, volunteers and ashram could continue to flourish in the future.
